BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING I,AST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last night. Those present were the Mayor (Mr W. Simpson). Crs. W. Olsen. M. W. Priest, D. D. Ryan, E. M. Simmers. K. Marenzi. P. S. Page, and the Clerk (Mr B. Dinnan). The treasurer reported as follows:District fund account, cr. £393 13s Id; Domain account, cr. £1 8s 6d; rate arrears, £548 14s sd; cemetery arrears, £18; library arrears, 15s: sundry accounts. £l5 15s 6d. Accounts amounting to £707 0s 6d were passed for payment. The following building permits were issued during the month: Public Hall Company, additions and renovation. £4O; W. J. Shannon. Septimas Street, £3O. For the year ended March 31, sixteen building permits were issued, the fees derived therefrom amounting to £27 ss. The total value of buildings constructed, additions, alterations, etc., amounted to £9,244 12s.
The Libary Committee’s report stated that for the period April, 1939, to March, 1940, the number of books issued was 3160. The average number of subscribers was 58. The total subscriptions and extra book fees collected for the year amounted to £39 12s sd. Fifty-eight new. publications were purchased and placed on the shelves of the lending department. Motor drivers' licences issued for the year ended March 31 numbered 201 and the fees amounted to £5O 2s 6d. For-ty-five heavy traffic licences were also issued, the fees from which amounted to £304 17s 9d. The clerk reported that the amounts paid off on loan money for the year ended March 31 were: Interest. £6Ol 6s sd; principal, £9lB 5s sd. The amount subscribed by residents of the borough to the recent Fighting Fund Appeal was £147 17s lOd and was made up as follows: House to house canvas, £BO 18s; collection Achilles reception, £29 14s; dance proceeds Achilles reception, £32 5s lOd; street day appeal. £5. Various committee reports were read and adopted.
HEALTH OF THE BOROUGH QUARTERLY REPORT OF INSPECTOR. The Health Inspector submitted his quarterly report to the Borough Council meeting last night as follows: — Notifiable infectious disease: This has been at a minimum, and the usual precautionary measures against the spread of infection have been applied where cases have occurred. Conditions at present are satisfactory. Foodshops and eating-houses: All these premises have been inspected at varying intervals and the general condition of all premises is being well maintained. Building, drainage and sanitary plumbing; The usual perusal of all plans prior to the issue of permits has been made, inspection of structures carried out during the course of erection. and also tests applied to all new drainage and plumbing work. The general standard of workmanship is being well maintained in accordance with regulations and by-laws. Complaints of various natures have been investigated, and where conditions warranted action, this has been taken to overcome defects. The report was adopted.
MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS Mr W. Hornblow (president) presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Eketahuna Miniature Rifle Club held in the club’s rooms last night. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £l4 4s lid. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet, Mr Hornblow congratulated the club on its successful season, which closed with a membership of 47. The financial result, he considered, was excellent when it was taken into consideration that a new range had to be erected and necessary repairs made to the club’s rooms. The club was grateful to Mr W. G. Mackey and the Oil Company for making it possible to have the range in order so that the club could take part in the Bush Association's competition. After an absence of five years the club’s team performed most creditably in the association's shoots. The club's competitions were keenly contested and many enjoyable evenings were spent by all. Friendly visits were paid by the Carterton and Hukanui clubs and these were very much appreciated. Mr Hornblow thanked the donors of trophies for competition, saying that these competitions contributed largely to making the season the success it was. He also thanked the committee for its work and support. and paid a tribute to the secretary, Mr H. Price, for his valuable services. In concluding. Mr Hornblow wished the club every success in the coming season, and thanked the press for its support at all times. The motion was carried without discussion.
The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron. Mr A. H. Herbert (re-elected); president, Mr W. Dawson: vice-president, Mr R. Holford; secretary. Mi- H. Price < re-elected >; treasurer. Mr O. Walton (re-elected); committee, Messrs A. Frederickson. F. West, H. Neilson. W. Hornblow. W. V. Richardson. The subscriptions were fixed at 5f for seniors and 3s for ladies and juniors. It was decided that the opening night be held on Wednesday, April 17. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
TENNIS CLUB SEASON CLOSED. The Eketahuna Lawn Tennis Club concluded the season's activities during the weekend, when the finals of the various competitions were played. Apologies for absence were received from Mr Wimsett (patron) and Mr 11. E. Great head (president). Mr M. P. Shaw presented the cups to the successful members, complimenting them on their play, especially Mr Liardet who had to play a great number of matches before winning the B grade championship on the closing day. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the club, after which friend-
ly matches were played for the remainder of the afternoon.
The following are the winners of the club competitions for the season:— Men’s A championship, R. Hornblow; men’s B championship, M. Liardet; men's handicap singles, R. Hornblow; ladies' A championship. Miss P. O'Regan; ladies’ B championship, Mrs J. Berney; ladies’ handicap singles. Miss M. Brittain; combined handicap doubles, Miss M. Brittain and R. Hornblow; men’s handicap doubles, Messrs Mcßride, and Fraser; ladies’ handicap doubles, Misses N. Greathead and K. Herbert.

H. C. PERCY WINS CHAMPIONSHIP.
The Alfredton Rifle Club fired the final championship shoot on Saturday in boisterous wind and with passing showers. The results of the various competitions are as follow: —Championship, A grade, Rfm H. C. Percy; runner-up, A. C. Edmonds; B grade. Rfm A. Algie; runner-up. Rfm I. Macdonald; handicap aggregate, A grade, Rfm J. H. Macdonald; B grade, Rfm H. Duckett; 300 yards handicap aggregate. A grade. .Rfm H. Seymour; B grade. Rfm I. Macdonald; 500 and 600 yards handicap aggregate, A grade, J. H. Macdonald. B grade. Mrs A. Leach. Saturday’s trophy was won by Rfm J. Reid. The scores were as follow: J. At the annual meeting of the Miniature Rifle Club last night the secretary stated that approximately 10,000 rounds of ammunition had been fired by members of the club last season.
