GREYTOWN

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last night. There were present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman). F. Dennes (treasurer), J. Herod, W. Grigg, G. Robinson. W. G. K. Wiggins, and Mrs Knell (secretary), The headmaster (Mr S. C. Shedden) was also present. The balance sheet for the past year was received from the Education Board audited and found correct. The chairman congratulated Mr Dennes on having his books returned without one alteration being made by the auditors. A petition was received from the residents of Woodside asking for better travelling facilities for their children. It was pointed out in the letter that the train did not run to time in the morning, and also that in the afternoon the pupils had to leave the school at 2 p.m. Further that some of the pupils had to walk over 11 miles before boarding the train and it was also one mile from the station to the school, the result being that some children walked five miles each day. The committee decided to send the petition to the Wellington Education Board as they considered some improvement was necessary. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £5 4s Id.

The headmaster reported as follows: Primary roll, 290 pupils; secondary roll, 49 pupils. During the swimming season 50 certificates had been gained by pupils. Both sections of the gardens harvested a fine crop of carrots which are now being lifted, the whole crop having been sold. The committee recorded its appreciation to the stall for the splendid manner in which the school sports had been conducted. Mr Shedden was asked to convey this resolution to his staff. This being the last meeting of the present committee the chairman thanked the members for the time they had given to school matters during the past two years. Mr Shedden also expressed his thanks to the committee for their cooperation.
