HARRIERS
KIATERE CLUB. ANNUAL. REPORT. The annual report of the Kiatere Harrier Club (which is signed by Mr D. E. Nelson (hon secretary) states inter alia: On behalf of the committee I have much pleasure in presenting the seventh annual report. The season’s activities were of a thoroughly enjoyable nature, good fellowship and harmony, which have been the keynotes of success since the club’s inception, again being in evidence. A particularly pleasing feature of the activities and one which was due in every way to the keenness and interest of the president, Mr A. L. Askew, and the senior members, was the revival of the junior section. Every encouragement was offered the younger runners —the issue of free uniforms and special trophies, etc. As a result some ten juniors were enrolled and throughout the year contested all heir events with the utmost enthusiasm.. In competitions the club met with a fair measure of success, the standard attained being well up to that 'of past years. In the teams’ race in connection with the Masterton Harrier Club’s rally at the commencement of the season, the club gained first place from a total of five teams. The first of the annual home-and-home races against the Olympic Harrier Club for the Turnbull Cup was run in Wellington and resulted in a win for Kiatere by a small margin. Unfortunately, owing to petrol restrictions, the City Club were unable to make the return visit, but in the coming season it is to be hoped that this event will again be contested as it has become one of the most enjoyable on the programme. In the Dannevirke Harrier Rally the club entered in both A and B grade events, and against strong opposition was placed second in the A division and third in the B grade. A team represented the club in the A grade at the provincial championships and once again in the face of strong competition performed very creditably to secure third place. Races for individual honour were always most interesting and hardfought and we wish to congratulate the following championship winners: W. Burgess. Mills Challenge Cup fdr 6] miles club championship; R. Greeks, Albert Cox Cup for 5 miles’ club championship; A. Adderson, Batkin Cup for 3 1-8 miles’ novice championship; M. Doyle, Batkin Cup for 3 1-8 miles’ junior championship, and the Turnbull Cup for 21 miles’ championship. During the year two very enjoyable dances were held, and on the evening of the official closing of the season another very successful function was held in the Masonic Hall in conjunction with the Masterton Harrier Club. Occasion was also taken in the earlier part of the year to make a presentation to and to farewell one of the club’s most popular foundation members and former secretary, Mr J. L. Burns, who has left the district. For their valuable assistance at these functions and throughout the year, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the ladies’ committee and to Mr L. Askew whose help has been much appreciated. The annual meeting will be held on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Y.M.C.A.
