MINIATURE RIFLES

MASTERTON CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. IMPORTANCE OF SHOOTING PRACTICE. The annual report of the Masterton Miniature Rifle Club states: —"With an increase in membership over the previous year the finances of the club are in a favourable position. A most successful and enjoyable shooting season is recorded. Outstanding is the teams’ performances, they having won both A and B grade Wairarapa InterClub Shields, together with the coveted Pragnell Shield. This latter shield, which was donated many years ago by the late Mr. O. N. C. Pragnell, of Masterton, has made its first appearance back with the local club after a period of 23 years. The championship of the club was won by Mr. P. Russell for the second time in succession, as was also the case in the ladies’ championship, which was won by Mrs King. The B and junior grades were won by Miss Dixon and Mr. K. Lambert respectively. The season's aggregate was keenly contested and resulted in a win for Mr. H. King, while Mr. L. H. Carter wen the B grade contest. The champion teams shot resulted in a tie between Mrs King and Mr. P. Russell, Mrs. King subsequently winning in the shoot off. “Prior to the club's captain, SecondLieut. H. V. Donald leaving for Trentham military camp, members paid a visit to his home to farewell him, and during the evening a presentation and expressions of goodwill were tendered by the president on behalf of all members. The war situation and the difficulties arising with ammunition supplies is viewed seriously by the committee, but latest information gives hopes of a continued supply of ammunition from England. In this connection we would point out the importance of miniature rille training to the youth of Masterton and district, and given adequate supplies of ammunition the club invites a large increase in new members. Military authorities of all nations agree on this one point, ‘a trained rille shot is the greatest asset.’ In conclusion, we extend thanks to all donors of trophies, to Mr. G. Malmo for the use of his premises, the Press for publicity, Mr. E. R. Rogers for auditing the books, and to all officials for their untiring work throughout the year.”

The report is signed by the president Mr. H. King and the secretary, Mrs. G King.
