OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

THE LATE PRIME MINISTER (To the Editor). Sir, —On reading your editorial in this evening's paper, I was disagreeably surprised to find a eulogy on our late beloved Prime Minister to be more or less criticism of the Government’s Social Security scheme and other legislation. It struck me forcibly that it was a pity that on such a sad occasion you could not refrain from what seems superfluous political propaganda. I cannot imagine Mr Savage attempting to make capital of the passing of a political opponent, and I think you would have shown a much wider outlook had you confined your editorial to a eulogy and withheld the rest till a more opportune time—Yours, etc., M. DE MUTH. Masterton. March 27. Our correspondent has read into the article in question matter it did not contain. The fact that the late Prime Minister had promoted legislation in some degree contentious was instanced only as emphasising that political opponents of Mr Savage agreed with his sup-, porters in classing him as one entitled to an unqualified tribute of respect.— Ed.
