The Pope, addressing 4000 pilgrims, said tlie lack of Christian charity among some statesmen caused the war. He bitterly condemned attempts to restore paganism in Europe and to drive back society to the days of pre-Chris-tian civilisation. The Pope declared: “The cause of the present situation can be found in the exaltation of human pride and strength instead of justice and equity.”
