PONGAROA

SOLDIERS’ ENTERTAINED

(“Times-Age” Special.)

There was a record crowd at the Pongaroa Town Hall when the settlers of the district entertained Lance Corporals R. Newland and C. Thomas and Private I. Burnett. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with songs by Mesdames Satherly, Eunson and Owen. A capable committee headed by Mrs Davies provided supper. An apology for absence was received from the county chairman. Mr C. P. Hunter. In introducing Mr A. Ruskell, Mr L. E. Davies said that gifts from the settlers had been forwarded to each of the local soldiers in the First Echelon. Mr Ruskell presented the guests of the evening with a wristlet watch each. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem brought the gathering to a close. Personal Items. Miss June Kent has returned home from a visit to Feilding. Mr and Mrs J. Sonter and Miss Souter. Levin, were visitors to Pongaroa during the week. Mr and Mrs H. Kayser will spend Easter in Wellington. Mr P. H. Donovan is visiting Wellington.

Mrs Kemp, Petone. is the guest of her daughter. Mrs Owen. The Vicarage.
