MEETING ON SATURDAY. C'Times-Aee” StiAcialJ The committee of the Martinborough Amateur Athletic and Horse Sports Club has all arrangements complete for the Centennial sports meeting on March 30. In addition to the usual competitions for horses and riders, there are new and interesting events. Lady riders have been well catered for and as some of the best lady riders of the Wairarapa are expected to take part, these events should provide good competition. The Club has been fortunate as regards special trophies as there are seven cups or trophies to be won in this section of the programme. In accordance with the aim of the Club to encourage children to compete an extensive range of events is included in the pony section. The younger children are eligible to compete in the classes for the older children. A new event which should attract a great deal of competition is the best turned out pony and well kept gear. A special trophy donated by a lady supporter of the club is given for this event with the idea of encouraging the children to bring their ponies forward showing the attention and care which should be given. Here again, there are a number of cups and trophies given by loyal supporters including Centennial cups given by the Martinborough Council. The dancing and piping section always most popular with the public has an interesting programme to offer to competitors and spectators with a number of cups and trophies for competition. A good programme of athletic events is provided with the idea of encouraging school children to take part in this section, and as a further inducement special trophies have been donated for boys and girls chamoionships. Some of the foremost athletes in the Wellington Province are expected for the open events which it is hoped will help to revive local interest in the Amateur Athletics. Numerous attractions in the way of Side Shows. ’Tug o' War. Weight Lifting, etc., are included. The Wairarapa College Pipe Band will be in attendance. The reorganised Martinborough Band will also be present. The nett profit from the meeting will be handed to the bath's committee as the Club’s effort towards the local Centennial Memorial. The local branch of the Plunkel Society will provide light luncheon and tea at a moderate charge. Hot water will be available free of I charge. A special car parking area j with a good view of all events is pro- I vided for aged and invalid persons.
