The Easter holidays began with a great exodus from, the cities to the country and seaside, almost similar to peace time traffic. All the main line railways generally equalled their normal Easter figures and in some cases exceeded them. The usual crowds of holidaymakers were augmented by large numbers of men on leave liorn the forces and relatives visiting evacuated children.
