BASKETBALL
NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. COLLEGE TEAM TO COMPETE. The Wairarapa College basketball team has entered for the Secondary Schools section of the New Zealand tournament. This is the first time a secondary schools tournament has been held and twelve teams have entered, including competitors from the South Island. Secondary schools are allowed to play girls who were at school in 1939. Wairarapa College will play girls who are at school this year. The experience gained by the team should be invaluable. The following girls have been chosen to represent the College: Elizabeth McLaren (captain). Doreen Dagg (vice-captain), Joan Russell, Josie Gemmell, Heather Douglas, Irene Shoosmith, Shirley Duley, Gwenda Barber, Irene Scott, Peggy Oliver, Dorothy Heckler, Kath Ross. Miss R. K. Edwards, sports mistress at the College, will manage the team, which will leave tomorrow by the 2 p.m. train. CENTENNIAL TOURNAMENT. WAIRARAPA TEAM. The Wairarapa basketball representative team left today to take part in the New Zealand Centennial basketball tournament, which is to be held at the Hataitai basketball courts, Wellington. Over 35 teams will compete. The Wairarapa team will play as follows: Monday? 9.40 a.m., against Poverty Bay; 1 p.m.. against Wanganui. Tuesday: 9 a.m., against Ashburton; 11.30 a.m.. against Waikato. The following girls will represent Wairarapa: R. K. Edwards (captain), L. Renner (vice-captain), M. Eastwood, M* McLaren, J. Gemmell, R. Percy, M. Brady, P. Hanley, A. Burgess, M. Carroll, B. Stitt. Miss D. O’Donnell is manager.
