BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Simpson). Councillors W. Olsen. D. D. Ryan. E. M. Simmers, K. Marenzi. P. Page and the Town Clerk (Mr. B. Dinnan). Accounts amounting to £245 19s lid were passed for payment. The Town Clerk reported on the borough finances as at February 29. as follows: District Fund Account. cr„ £336 4s 8d; Domain Account, cr., Ils 9d; rate arreas (including year ending March 31. 1940), £592 2s 2d; cemetery arrears, £l2 ss; library arrears, £l. A building permit was granted to the Tararua Electric Power Board for alterations and additions to the Exchange Buildings, the cost of the work being £B3O. The Works Committee reported that during the month metalling shoulders on main highways Nos. 477 and 62 had been completed. Street cleaning and metalling of part of Hastwells Street had been carried out, also repairs to breaks in water mains. The Fire Brigade wrote requesting that fire plugs be cleared and marked. This was agreed to. It was decided that the final instalment of the Council's contribution towards the Wellington Provincial Court at the Centennial Exhibition be paid, the amount being £l4. It was decided to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to borrow by way of loan the sum of £750 for the purpose of erecting a dwelling under the Rural Housing Act. Councillor Olsen reported that protective work in connection with the water pipe line was now in hand. Il was intended to move the pipe line further back at some future date, but the work now being done made the position safe. He explained that the muddy state of the water during a fresh in the river was due to a large slip which came down above the intake. Until the river had washed this away a certain amount of sediment from the slip was inevitable. LATE MR RIDGLEY CORONER’S INQUEST. An inquest into the sudden death of Mr Frederick Alexander Ridgley, aged 59, of Greytown, which occurred at Putura on Sunday, was held before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.. coroner. A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, that of heart failure, was returned. The deceased, who was on a visit to Mr. G. A. Devenport, was engaged in the hay field and complained of not feeling well. He later collapsed and died. BUSH CRICKET WIN FOR EKETAHUNA. Only one game was played in the Bush cricket competition on Saturday and that was between Pahiatua and High School, the former winning by an innings and 19 runs. High School’s first innings realised 53 and Pahiatua replied with five for 118 (declared). In its second strike High School compiled 46. The Pahiatua Fire Brigade defaulted to Eketahuna. ATHLETIC CLUB SPORTS ON EASTER MONDAY. Recognised as one of the most progressive amateur athletic organisations in the North Island the Eketahuna Amateur Athletic Club will hold a meeting on the Eketahuna Domain on Easter Monday. The large number cf entries received include some of the most prominent athletes in the eastern portion of the Wellington province The club is fortunate in having two such capable officials as Messrs J. W. Henderson and C. Hausman as secretaries. as both are keen to further the interests of the club, and are sparing no effort to make the meeting the success it deserves to be. Those who are looking forward to spending an enjoyable afternoon in pleasant surroundings could not do better than visit the athletic meeting in the Domain on Monday. RED CROSS SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Eketahuna sub-branch of the N.Z. Red Cross Society was held last evening, when the president (Mr. W. F. Taylor) presided over an excellent attendance of members and others interested. Mr. Taylor, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, gave a comprehensive survey of the activities of the branch during the past year, and thanked all those who had helped in any way to make the initial year of the branch such a success. He especially mentioned the secretary. Mrs. W. G. Henderson, who had carried out her duties most efficiently. The balance sheet, which showed a credit of £5 10s 3d. was adopted without discussion. Mrs. Henderson, as delegate to the' conference held at Wellington last t week, gave an interesting and comprehensive account of the conference, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
The Mayor. Mr. W. Simpson, was then called upon to present the certficates won by members during the year. Mr. Simpson said that it was indeed a great pleasure to him to present the awards as it was widely recognised that the Red Cross was carrying out a great work. He trusted that the branch would prosper and concluded by congratulating the recipients on their keenness and efficiency. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Mi'. W. F. Taylor: hon. secretary. Mrs. W. J. Henderson; treasurer. Miss K. Herbert; committee. Misses V. Greathead, M. Wilson. R. White. Palmer. Fraser. McAnulty.
A hearty votes of thanks was accorded to the retiring officers. It. was decided that a hygiene class be formed at an early date.
The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair and to the Press.
