BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING IN CARTERTON
LAST NIGHT'S BUSINESS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided and there were also present Crs W. A. Hart. L. M. Clark. R. A. Copeland, C. Stevens. E. M'cKenzie and O. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Crs J. Udy. C. J. De Lacey and H. Mortensen. The Department of Internal Affairs. Wellington, wrote asking what progress had been made with the preparation in connection with town planning, under the 1926 Act. The matter was left over till the next meeting of the council. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hart, the sum of £3OO, granted towards the cost of the erection of local Centennial Memorial Baths, was passed for payment. Cr Wolters proposed, and Cr McKenzie seconded, that after the receipt of the County Council's subsidy for the same purpose, application be made for the Government subsidy. The motion was carried.
It was resolved on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr McKenzie, that the final payment of £36 7s be made toward the Dominion Court at the Centennial Exhibition. It was resolved to forward a letter to the secretary of the R.S.A. pointing out that the council was unable to reserve 15 plots at the Clareville Cemetery as a soldiers’ portion. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the District Fund of £652 12s 9d. The receipts since the last meeting totalled £284 9s 2d. The gasworks account is in credit £194 14s 9d and the amount received since the last meeting is £lBl 19s 3d. Accounts amounting to £2228 8s (District Fund Account) were passed for payment, and the gasworks account passed for payment, totalled £409 9s sd.
The Mayor was thanked for his attendance at the Municipal Conference and for his report regarding the same.
It was decided to remove a culvert leading into the right-of-way near Mr Johnston’s property, owing to its decayed state.
Mr W. A. Hart brought up the question of entertaining local members of the New Zealand echelons. Cr McKenzie moved and Cr Hart seconded, "that a public meeting of citizens be called for Wednesday with a view to discussing the question of entertaining troops. The motion was carried. The reports of the works and gas committees and also the overseer’s report were adopted.
