GREYTOWN

BOWLING TROTMAN CUP. ("Times-Age” Special.) Playing for the Trotman Cup W. Kilgour defeated N. McLeod and thereby won the A section. He then met C. Brown who had won the B section. This game was full of interest and some good bowling was witnessed. At the end of the 20th head Brown was two up, but although Kilgour played three good bowls on the last head, Brown secured the second shot and won the game, 18/17. These games for the cup, donated by Mr H. Trotman Senr., have been played on the handicap system and Mr H. J. Nightingale, who did the handicapping, is to be congratulated on the number of close finishes. These games have created a lot of interest and the win by C. W. Brown has been very popular. Fire in Memorial Park. The Greytown Fire Brigade was called to the Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon. It is stated that two young lads were smoking behind the Maori Hut that had been erected for the Centennial pageant. The manuka scrub caught fire and the flames quickly spread, setting fire to a large totara tree. The brigade soon put the blaze cut. Personal Items. The news of the sudden death of Mr Frederick Alexander Ridgley, of Main .Street, Greytown, was received on Sunday evening. Mr Ridgley was on a holiday visit to Eketahuna and was out in a hay field when he suddenly expired. The late Mr Ridgley, who was 59 years of age, had a tea rooms and confectionery business in Greytewn. He served with the Machine Gunners in France in the Oreat War, and was a member of the local branch cf the Returned Soldiers' Association. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs Gray (Tawa Flat) and Miss M. Ridgley, of Greytown. An inquest is to be held. Miss Jessie Shaw, of the Sydney Conservatorium. of Music, with her parents, Mr and Mrs H. Shaw, of Kiki Kiki, Waikato, are at present the guests of Mrs Paterson, McMaster Street. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital on Sunday morning of Mary Elizabeth Wood, wife of Mr Archer Wood, manager of the Greytown Fruit Growing Co. The late Mrs Wood, who was 36 years of age, came to New Zealand about seventeen years ago. She had been in ill health for some considerable time, and had been in the Masterion Hospital for about a fortnight. A husband and two young daughters are left to mourn their loss. Mr' and Mrs R. Page have returned to Greytown after a fortnights holiday. Mrs G. S. Maloney, who has been on a short visit to Christchurch, returned to Greytown on Sunday.
