CRICKET A WIN FOR SCHOOL — (“Times-Age” Special.) Playing at Pahiatua on Saturday, Eketahuna suffered a three-point loss against High School. School batted first and compiled 108 Staples 13, Slater 15, Watts 29, Salter 24). Bowling: Payne, 3 for 23; Thompson, 4 for 19. Eketahuna replied with 31, none of the batsmen reaching double figures. Macßae was the most successful bowler, taking 6 wickets for 4 runs, Staples 2 for 7. Eketahuna followed on and made 116 for seven wickets declared (Francois 22, Thompson 28, Payne 30). Bowling: Carthew, 3 for 7. School in its second innings made 19 for 5 wickets when time was called, Staples being, not out with 13. Thompson took 3 wickets for 14. Personals. Mrs W. Shannon and Miss Joyce Shannon, Parkville, are visitors to the Exhibition. Mr and Mrs J. Metcalfe, Church Street, are visiting their son, Mr T. Metcalfe, Wanganui. The death occurred in the Pahiatua Hospital on Friday of Mrs Henry Elsmore, a well known resident of Newman, at the age of G 7 years. RIFLE SHOOTING TAR AREA CLUB CONTEST, Members of the Tararua Defence Rifle Club held a competition for the Blewett Cup last Saturday. The conditions were good. C. Rusmussen was the winner with 68 off the rifle and W. J. Manser runner-up, with 67 off the rifle. The match also finished the aggregates. The championship was won by J. P. Petersen, with 198 and run-ners-up were P. Berry and C. Sigvertsen 196. Ihe Handicap aggregate was won by W. J. Manser with 199, ihe runner-up being J. P. Petersen with 198. The. service shoot will be held on
SWIMMING SEASON TO CLOSE. A special meeting of the committee of the Eketahuna Swimming Club was held at the baths last evening, Dr. E. M. Simmers presiding over a full attendance of members. A full discussion ensued on the possibility of carrying on for the remainder of the season and after hearing the report of ihe treasurer, Mr W. J. Henderson, it was unanimously decided to abandon the swimming carnival on March 16th and that the baths be closed on that date. It was pointed out that owing to a counter attraction being held on Saturday it. was not possible to hold the carnival. A committee consisting of the president. secretary, treasurer, captain and vice-captain was set up to go into ways and means to augment the finances of the club. ODD FELLOWS’ LODGE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING, The fortnightly meeting cl Loyal Makakahi Lodge was held last night, when in the absence of the V.G., Bro. S. Morriss, Bro. W. D. Scott presided over a fair attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £l7 12s were passed. One friend was initiated into the Order. It was decided to write to the District Committee asking for permission to instal a septic tank drainage system at the hall. Bro. R. Farrow gave an interesting report on the work of the special District Conference held in Wellington recently, for which he received a hearty vote of thanks. He was also heartily congratulated on being re-el-ected to the district management committee . It was reported that Bro. A. Fredcricksen. who is in hospital in Wellington. is now well on the road to recovery. SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna High School Committee was held last night. Mr 11. E. Greathead (chairman) presided and there were a ; so present: Messrs R. Payne. 11. E. Rogers, J. Tolley. S. Daniel and A. B. Fordyce 'headmaster). Leave ol absence was granted to Mr It. Gallagher. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to Mr Fordyce on behalf of the residents and committee and trusted thi.t his stay in Eketahuna would prove pleasant. Mr Fordyce suitably returned thanks. The secretary reported that the books and accounts had been stint forward for audit.
Messrs Greathead and Rogers were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
Messrs Tolley and Daniel were asked to prepare prices for necessary asphalt work and were given power to act in the matter.
Accounts amounting to £ll 5s 5d were passed. Mr Fordyce reported on the recent school excursion to the Exhibition. The secretary was instructed to obtain prices for the supply of 7 cords ft' firewood. Personal. .June Cooper, daughter of Mi' and Mrs J.. Cooper. Newman, is an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital. Mr S. Morriss, Rongokokako. is a visitor to the Exhibition.
