HORSE SPORTS

ALFREDTON CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING

KEEN COMPETITION EVIDENT.

TROPHY AND OTHER WINNERS

(“Times-Age” Special.)

Favoured by glorious weather the horse sports held by the Alfredton Distroct Sports Club on Saturday proved highly successful. Although the attendance of the public was not up to that of last year, due no doubt to the petrol restrictions and counter-attractions, there was a big crowd present to witness some thrilling and spectacular competition between local and outside competitors. All the events were well filled and competition was keen. The judge, Mr. Alf Ayres, of Dannevirke, had a difficult task at times to separate the competitors. Two unfortunate accidents occurred during the day's programme, the first happening when Mr H. George’s mount fell heavily at a rail jump in the maiden jumping competition. Mr. George, though badly shaken, was able to remount and later competed in other events. A more serious mishap occurred in the open hunter’s competition, when Mr. John Nelson, of Pori, received a broken collar bone when he was thrown heavily when his mount hit the top of the jump. He received medical attention on the ground. The Alfredton Women’s Institute conducted a'stall in aid of the patriotic funds, and did excellent business in ice-cream, sweets and produce. A competition for a dinner in aid of the same funds was won by Mrs. G. Houlbrooke. The officials, under the leadership of the popular president, Mr. J. L. Heckler, carried out their respective duties in great style, the big programme being run to schedule. The secretary. Mr. R. G. Low. was a busy man all day and much of the credit for the smooth running of the sports as a whole is due to his ability as an organiser.

A public address system provided spirited music throughout the day, as well as being used for the announcements. Results: —
