MEETING OF COMMITTEE.
OVERCROWDING BECOMES ACUTE
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Lansdowne School was held on Thursday evening. Mr J. G. McFarlane occupied the chair in the unavoidable absence of Mr H. E. Pither. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Logan, Fly and Faulknor. Accounts amounting to £4 5s lid were passed. The secretary presented the annual accounts for the school year and after discussion it was resolved to send them forward for audit. The headmaster’s report was adopted. The roll stands at 272 pupils and the attendance is considered good. In connection with the Centennial Celebrations a party of 70 pupils under the control of the teachers will, visit the Exhibition on Monday, March 18. A donation to cover the cost of two office chairs, a supply of gramophone records and a weaving loom was received from the executive of the Home and School Association, and it was also intimated that a Paddy’s Market in aid of school funds would be held in Queen Street on Wednesday, April 24. The annual swimming sports had been held during the month and 74 pupils qualified for swimming certifiates as follow: —25 yards, 21 pupils; 50 yards, 16 pupils; 220 yards, 10 pupils; 440 yards, 2 pupils; 880 yards, 14 pupils; 1760 yards, 1 pupil; total 74 pupils. Arrangements are being made to complete the planting of live hedges round the school and it is proposed to plant the Blair Street area during the coming season. Overcrowding at the school, particularly in the infant classes has become acute and it was decided to once more bring the matter under the board's attention and ask for immediate relief.
