HISTORIC PICTURE

DONATION FOR PATRIOTIC FUND.

An imposing photograph of H.M.S. Achilles, together with autographed insets of Wairarapa men serving on the warship, is being placed on view in the window of Mr. W. G. Perry, Queen Street, this evening. The picture, which has been framed by Mr. Perry and donated by him to the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army campaign in aid of the National Patriotic Fund, shows the Achilles as she entered Auckland Harbour recntly, bearing scars of the River Plate battle. These are to be seen where the rust has marked the sides of the warship from holes caused by shell splinters. Postcard reproductions are being made of the picture for sale in aid of patriotic funds. No doubt many people will be interested to see the picture, which will be on display only this evening.

Mr. Perrys idea is an admirable one and it is expected that a considerable sum will be raised for the patriotic fund.

The picture, which is to be auctioned in Masterton next week, bears the following inscription:-— “H.M.S. Achilles and Wairarapa members of the ship's company. Arrival in Auckland Harbour on February 25, 19-10, after River Plate victory on December 13. 1939. H.M.S. Achilles was the first British warship to go into action maimed by New Zealanders."
