The death of Mr John Huston Finley, editor Emeritus of the "New York Times," is reported in a cablegram from New York. Messrs A. Howell, W. O, Feisst, and A. D. Forster (Matamata), F. L. Smith, J. Read (Wellington) were guests yesterday at the Prince of of Wales Hotel, Masterton.
Mr J. Bradbury of Masterton left today to attend the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championships at Wellington, where he will act as one of the official timekeepers. Hotel Midland guests yesterday, included Messrs T. E. Dowdall, N. C. Armitage. H. Govan (Auckland); C. Morgan (Wanganui), H. Grundy (Palmerston North), C. W. Rushbrook, J. B'. Niven, E. Walton, A. J. Stitt, H. K. Wade, J. Carter (Wellington). In proposing the re-election for the fifth successive term of Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, as president of the Municipal Association (whose election was briefly reported yesterday), the Mayor of Wellington. Mr T. C. A. Hislop, said that Mr Jordan's qualifications were well known. It was an appropriate time to express appreciation of the able way in which he had acted as president and to thank him for Tiis courtesy’ and consideration. Mr J. A. C. Allum, Auckland City Council, seconded the nomination, Mr P. W. Goldsmith, Mayor of Levin, supporting it on behalf of the smaller boroughs. Hawke's Bay has had an informal and unexpected visit from Captain Parry, C. 8., commander of H.M.S. Achilles. Captain Parry arrived in Hastings on Wednesday evening and expressed a wish to see something of the principal schools and something of the district. He visited Hastings High School yesterday morning, and after motoring round the district he was taken in Napier, where, in company with Mr Herrick, he inspected the harbour board works. Later he visited Hukarcire Maori Girls' College, where he was greeted with action songs. He said he had been impressed on board the .Achilles by the songs and hakas he had seen performed by the Maori members cl the crew. Yesterday afternoon he visited Te Ante College. Captain and Mrs Parry left today. In addition to the office of president, hold by Mr T. Jordan (Masterton), the following officers were elected at the annual conference of the Municipal Association in Wellington yesterday:— Vice-presidents, the Mayors of Wellington. Mr T. C. A. Hislop, Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis. Christchurch, Mr R. McFarlane, Dunedin. Mr A. H. Allen, Lower Hutt. Mr J. W. Andrews, Paeroa, Mr W. Marshall; executive, president, vice-presidents, the Mayors of Nelson, Mr G. L. Page, Ashburton. Dr. G. I. Miller, Palmerston North. Mr A. E. Mansford. Sumner. Mr J. E. Tait. Wairoa, Mr 11. L. Harker, and Feiiuir.g. Mr T. L. Seddon. the chairman of the Auckland Transport Board. Mr W. 11. Nagle, the chairman of the Papatoctoe Town Board, Mr L. J. Kendall, and the chairman of the Otautau Town Board. Mr W. J. Wesney.
