SERVICES APPEAL
PICTURE OF THE ACHILLES TO BE AUCTIONED. AND POST CARD COPIES SOLD. As one means of bringing in contributions to the Fighting Services Welfare Fund, the local Citizens’ Committee is proposing to auction a large framed photograph of H.M.S. Achilles, taken on the day on which the cruiser arrived at Auckland, and was accorded a triumphant reception on her return from the River Plate battle.
The sale of the picture is to be entrusted to the district Auctioneers’ Association and, provided the consent and approval of the Centennial Committee can be obtained, it is hoped to hold the auction at the Centennial. Concert, on the evening of Thursday week next. It is taken for granted that the merit and interest of the picture and the object to be served will induce spirited bidding. In addition to the auctioning of the framed photograph of the cruiser, it is proposed to sell throughout the Wairarapa. with the help of schools, and any organisations willing to assist, post card copies of the picture. Il is anticipated that the sale of these at a modest price, and in large numbers, will bring in a substantial contribution to the Fighting Services Welfare Fund. The whole ol' the money raised Cor this purpose will be paid into the National Patriotic Fund, and will be expended by the Y.M.C.A. and the Salvation Army, under the control of the National Patriotic Council, in providing comforts and recreational facilities for the members of our fighting services in camp, at the front and elsewhere.
