CUT FLOWERS
SOME USEFUL HINTS. Cut flowers last longer if you cut thorn in the early morning, or in theevening when the sun is clown. Petals arc more rigid, .the scent is more perceptible and the stems are stiffer. Cut them with a long slanting cut across the stems. This prevents stems resting on the bottom of the vase. Split the stems of hardwood plants to allow the water to bo absorbed more readily. Cut ofT an inch of the bark of chrysanthemum stems and split them up three inches. Cut roses in the bud stage when the colour just begins to show and gladioli when the second flower on the stem just begins to open. Seal the ends of the stems of such plants as poppy, hollyhock, dahlia and hydrangea by burning in a flame for a minute or two. This prevents'the loss of gummy juices. Place them up to the neck in cold water for an hour or two overnight before arranging them. Strip off the lower leaves to lessen loss of moisture by transpiration and prevent the decaying leaves fouling the water. Use deep bowls and vases and keep the flowers out of excessive heat and draughts, yet allow plenty of fresh air to reach them. Revive wilted blooms
and nosegays by cutting off the stems in hot water, leaving them in the water until it cools; then stand in cold water for an hour or two.
