CARNATIONS

READILY RAISED FROM SEED. Carnations are readily raised from seeds sown now in pans containing equal parts of sifted leaf-soil, loam and sand. Place a good layer of rubble or crocks in the bottom of the pan for drainage, a layer of leaves above them, and then fill up with compost to within half an inch of the top. Level the surface and scatter over it a little finely-sifted soil; sow the seeds and cover lightly with fine sand. Cover the pans with panes of glass and place them in a greenhouse or propagator. As soon as the seedlings appear transfer them to a shelf near the roof-glass, removing the glass covers. When large enough to handle prick them off into other pans and return them to the shelf. When the plants have obtained a hold on the soil remove them to cooler quarters and finally harden them: and eventually, When nice sturdy little plants are obtained, transfer them to beds in the open, removing them to permanent positions in autumn or the following spring.
