PEONIES

DO NOT LIKE BEING DISTURBED. Peonies usually take a year or two to become properly established and for this reason should be disturbed only when, through overcrowding or othercauses, they begin to show signs of deterioration. The sooner transplanting is done the better chance they will have of becoming established before winter. Lift the clumps carefully, splitting into portions of convenient size and discarding ; any pieces that are obviously worn out. If at all dry they should be soaked in a vessel of water before replanting in freshly prepared ground. Peonies appreciate shade from the hottest sun and grow best in deeply cultivated soil.
