The New Zealand Defence League wrote asking for the council’s urgent consideration of universal compulsory national service. Cr Hart moved that the council support the proposal as outlined by the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, that compulsion was not necessary and that voluntary enlistment was the proper course to be taken. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The Mayor moved and Councillor Mortensen seconded, “That this council is of opinion that all citizens should be allotted any task which is best suited to them.” This was carried, Councillor Hart wishing his vote to be recorded in the negative.

The Mayor was appointed to attend the Municipal Conference at Wellington early in March. The question of farewelling recruits who left the town or district for military camp was before the council on the application of members of the R.S.A. After consideration the Mayor and Councillor Mortensen were appointed to represent the borough in this matter, together with the R.S.A and citizens.
