Y.M.C.A.

MORRISON SWIMMING SHIELD. WON BY DAVID STEWART. The annual Y.M.C.A. swimming contest for the Morrison Shield was held on Saturday last, when, in spite of the somewhat unpleasant weather, a substantial number- of boys took part. This competition is of a somewhat unusual nature, in that speed- is not taken into account. Points are awarded for neatness, correct stroking and style, The events include swimming freestyle, breaststroke, on the back and Linder water, as well as towing a boy, bringing a heavy weight from the bottom of the baths and three types of diving. The winner this year was David Stewart, who gained 62 points out of a possible total of 75. The competition was very keen, the second and third places being gained by G. Masters and J. Blackwood, with 61 and 60 points respectively. The general standard of swimming displayed by the boys was considered very good. The judging was done by Mr R Barnes, who later entered the water and gave an interesting demonstration for the benefit of the boys. Mr G. Masters, on behalf of the directors of the Y.M.C.A., thanked Mr Barnes for his assistance, the boys following with hearty applause.
