TYNESIDE
HOMESTEAD DESTROYED FIRE AT “TOTARA FLATS." (“Times-Age” Special.) The residence of Mr W. B. Gillies. “Totara Flats,” Tyneside, was burnt to the ground on a recent morning at about 9 o’clock. The homestead was 17 miles from Masterton. Mr Gillies, who was absent at the time, visiting his wife in the Palmerston North Hospital, is a heavy loser, as although the place was insured, it had just been extensively renovated and modernised. It is' stated that the fire was seen breaking out from the front of the homestead by men working near by. on Mr lan Macßae's Tyneside station. A strong wind which was blowing at the time soon spread the flames and the building was quickly ablaze from end to end. A sudden change in the. wind, however, saved the outbuildings. Water was not available in sufficient quantities for fighting the fire. No furniture was saved, owing to the intense heat.
