MINISTER OF CUSTOMS RESIGNS LEASING OF RACEHORSE CRITICISED. STATEMENT BY MR MENZIES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. CANBERRA, February 23. The Minister of Customs. Mr J. N. Lawson, tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies today, following the Labour criticism of his action in leasing a racehorse from a director of Australian Consolidated Industries, to which the Government proposed to grant a monopoly to manufacture motor-cars in Australia. Mr Lawson stated that he had entered into the arrangement innocently, and he was resigning in order that the criticism would be allayed and the Government relieved of that embarrassment.
Mr Menzies replied giving praise to Mr Lawson's Ministerial work and confirmed that Mr Lawson's personal integrity was not involved by the “unfortunate error.” Mr Menzies later told the Press that no pressure, direct or indirect, had been brought to bear on Mr Lawson.
