The Alfred Matthews-Memorial Cup for the champion fleece in the Farmers’ Union fleece competition has been won this year by Mr T. A. Brown, of Wangaehu. The judge. Mr V. S. Wilton, of Masterton, said the fleece was one of the most outstanding entered in the competition since its inception. The fleece was exceptionally even, and of high yield, showing a good district crimp with a splendid blocky tip. Judging of the fleeces took place yesterday. the awards being as follow: Champion fleece. Alfred Metthews Memorial Cup: T. A. Brown. Wangaehu. Farmers’.Union fine crossbred class: T. A. Brown 1; A. Ross 2. Coarse crossbred class: G. Shaw 1 and 2. Young Farmers' Club class for fine crossbreds: G. Blatchford. 1: D. C. Ross 2. • Medium crossbred class: G. Blatchford. 1; E. Sanson. 2 and 3. In the Young Farmers' Club entries there was a great variation in the quality and condition of the fleeces, but the first six in each class were outstanding. The first prize-winner in the fine wool section, though lacking in quantity, was much the same type of wool as the fleece which won the championship. The medium crossbred was more an average class, though the first and second fleeces were outstanding.
