THE WHEAT INDUSTRY

VISIT OF CONTROLLER local crops of excellent QUALITY. WORK OF GROWERS COMMENDED. The Wheat Controller, Mr Robert McPherson, paid a short visit to Masterton recently and took the opportunity of discussing the general aspects of the wheat growing industry with local millers and merchants. Mr McPherson inspected several samples of this season's Wairarapagrown milling wheat and expressed the opinion that the quality compared more than favourably with wheat grown elsewhere in New Zealand. The growers, he stated, were to be complimented on the excellent quality and condition of the wheat being'harvested this season. It was very pleasing, said Mr McPherson to find that farmers in the Wairarapa had responded to the appeal by sowing greater areas in wheat last year. Statistics had proved that wheat was profitable crop to grow at present prices. As Wheat Controller Mr McPherson pointed out the seriousness of the present international position which made transport between different countries increasingly difficult and he again appealed to farmers to increase their areas this year as a national safeguard. A matter of interest to all pig and poultry farmers and users of bran and pollard generally, is that tests carried out by the New Zealand Standards Institute proved that New Zealand bran and. pollard now compared more than favourably with imported Australian products so far as the feeding value was concerned.
