' BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING FAVOURS CONSCRIPTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Card presiding. There were also present Councillors J. Viles, W. Johnson, R. F. Watson, C. R. Skipage. IVI. B. Tait, C. C. Kenward, H. W. Cundy and T G. Hardie. In response to a letter from the New Zealand Defence League, the council passed a resolution in favour of conscription, Councillors Watson and Kenward requesting that their votes against the motion should be recorded on the minutes. The Salvation Army and Y.M.C.A. were given permission to conduct a house to house canvass for funds in the week ending March 16. The clerk (Mr 11. Rolls) reported that outstanding rates as at January 31 totalled £331 Ils 2d. Mr A. E. Smith, Bell Street, was granted permission for a water connection. Mr Rolls was authorised to attend the Town Clerks' Conference to be held in ‘Wellington on March 5. Mr J. Holmes was appointed dog tax collector, ranger and poundkeeper. The dog tax was raised from Is Gd to 2s Gd tor working dogs and from 5s to 7s Gd for other dogs. The Fire Brigade wrote expressing its thanks for a grant of £3O. Following receipt of a letter from the Transport Department, it was decided to offer £2O per year for the transport inspector's services. A resolution was passed in connection with the water supply loan. It was decided to send the grand piano at the Anzac Hall to Trantham Camp. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE I MEETING AT KAHUTARA. The first meeting of the year for the Kahutara Women's Institute was held in the Kahutara Hali yesterday, Mrs McKenzie presiding over a fair attendance. Tim delegates appointed to the Federation meeting to bo held ini Masterion were Mesdames Pope and D. Fenwick. The competitions resulted as follow: Raspberry jam Mrs Wilson 1; Mrs Rogers 2, Mrs Dufiy 3. Best flower in garden, Mrs McKenna 1; Mi’s Pope 2; Mrs D. Wilson 3. Junior competition: Apple pie, Miss L. Hood 1. The hostesses for the afternoon wore' Mesdames Corlei. Pcltinger and Miss Nikaolison. Day of Prayer. Today is observed as a day of prayer for women. Members of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican churches are holding a united service m the Parish Hall. Personal Items. The Rev J. T. Holland will go into camp al Waiouru on Saturday as Chaplain to the sth Feild Battery. He will 1 return on February 17.
