BLOCKADE PRESSURE
ADMITTED IN GERMANY. PRODUCTION OF OIL FROM COAL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright BERLIN. January 22. An official of the Economics Ministry in a broadcast admitted the ‘stranglehold’ of the British blockade and declared that the consumption of petrol for non-essen-tial purposes was sabotage. He claimed that the large proportion of Germany’s oil needs was being produced from coal. This production was rapidly extending in parts of Germany that were safe from air raids. Germany was getting her essential foreign oil from countries which could not be reached by the blockade and the Polish supplies were most promising. All lorries in Germany would soon be run on coal gas, minimising the oil needs.
