NATION-WIDE STRIKE

THREATENED IN AUSTRALIAN COAL INDUSTRY ARBITRATION ABANDONED. IN FAVOUR OF DIRECT ACTION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 11.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The “Sydney Morning Herald” says a Common-wealth-wide coal strike is threatened as a result of steps taken by representatives of the combined mining unions to abandon arbitration in favour of direct action. Representatives walkout of the Coal Board of Reference. It is understood that the executive committee of the combined mining unions will now recommend to aggregate meetings of employees that, if the Federal Government refuses to intervene for a settlement of disputes on the coalfields, all mines should be thrown idle.
