NIGHT PROWLER
INCIDENT AT LANSDOWNE LAST NIGHT. Residents of Lansdowne, in particular nurses at the Masterton hospital, are uneasy at the presence of a night prowler who is stated to accost women and girls. Last night, at about 10.30 o'clock, a nurse walking alone along the Te Ore Ore Road, opposite the Presbyterian Church, saw a man crouching behind a fence in the Lansdowne School grounds. As she approached, he jumped over the fence and the nurse immediately ran across the road. Her cries for help were heard by Mr R. L. Ferguson who, armed with a walking stick and carrying a torch, rushed out in time to see a tall figure running towards the school buildings. Mr Ferguson gave chase and searched among the building and trees, but there was ample cover and the prowler got away. Other nurses, it is stated, have had similar experiences and the sketchy description of the'man given by those who saw him last night, seems to confirm the belief that one person only is concerned. The Masterton police slate that no incidents of this nature have been reported to them for some time past.
