ATTACK BY GUNMEN

ON BRITISH OFFICIAL IN SHANGHAI. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SHANGHAI, January 6. Two gunmen, reported to be Chinese. fired four shots at Mr Godfrey Phillips, British secretary to the Shanghai Municipal Council, as he was entering a car outside his home, states a Shanghai message. They missed and fled. The Shanghai correspondent of the United Press of America says Japan-ese-controlled gendarmerie later admitted that they were holding three suspects in connection with the Godfrey Phillips incident. British military authorities demanded their surrender, since the attack occurred in the British defence sector. An unconfirmed report states that thej' have been released.
