TROTTING
GREYMOUTH MEETING PURINA WINS CHIEF EVENTGEORGE ARLISS SCORES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, January 4. The Greymouth Trotting Club’s midsummer meeting opened today in perfect weather. There was a large attendance. The track was dry and fast. The totalisator handled £13,347, compared with £14,406, a decrease of £1059. There was a spectacular smash in the Intermediate Handicap, almost paralleling that experienced in an event in the same club’s last summer meeting. Of a total of 15 starters, only three were unaffected by the smash, and only five finished the course. With 31 furlongs to go, Equerry tangled and fell, bringing down Golden River, Erin’s Lad, Kohua, Misdeal, and excluding Zingarrie, Chameleon, Balaclava, Aleli, Manpower and King’s Navy from the race. Apart from the placed horses, Zingarrie and Chameleon were the only pair to finish. Sulkies, horses and drivers were strewn all over the track, but the only one injured was J. Fraser, Junr, driver of Kohua, who was admitted to hospital with slight concussion and slight back injuries. His condition is satisfactory. Results:—

Nominations for the Centennial Cup meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, and forfeits fo Hhe Wellington Stakes, will close today at 5 p.m. It seems hardly necessary, but a reminder is given owners and trainers who are thinking of entering horses for the Wellington Centennial meeting,' that a spell of fine hot weather cloes not affect the Trentham track as in former days. The club’s automatic watering system provides a very efficient means of keeping the sting out of tfic ground, and special efforts are being made this year in the preparation of the race track. Costly Teaching. Teaching and ■ giving small boys opportunity to learn how to ride can prove rather costly. Trqiners and,' owners blame the starter when a horse | gets left, and blame somebody or other when interference takes place; but they should really chastise thremselves for putting up boys who really do quite well considering, their lack of experience but are asked to do too much for their size and age. Some of the youngsters seen out recently could not assist a horse, and in fact the form could not be accepted as correct. A Bad Passage. Knight Commander would have been more prominent in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru if he had had a better passage during the middle stages. Evidently his inexperienced apprentice rider had been instructed not to be in a hurry to be up with the leaders, as he pulled him about when in a handy position, and was in a rear berth at one stage. He then rushed him up to the leaders rounding the home turn, and it was not surprising that the gelding was done with early in the straight.
