Thrived on Racing. Both Twenty Grand and The Wrecker indicated at Oamaru that plenty of racing does not hurt them. The former ran a close third in the Waitaki Hack, after filling fourth place in the high-weight event, and The Wrecker went one better by winning over seven furlongs after finishing fourth in the principal event. The Wrecker ran one of his best races when he won, and had no trouble in beating Nightcalm, whose apprentice rider was not of much use to him when it came to riding him out. The Problem of Staying. Montessa was a strong fancy for the President’s Handicap at Waikouaiti. but after being one of the leaders she stopped at the business end. It is rather interesting to note that a filly who could stay out a mile and a-half under 8.10 in the Oaks Stakes could not stay a mile and a-quarter in a handicap under 7.1. It was again proved that staying when racing against horses of the same age and staying in a handicap of seasoned horses not infrequently create misleading ideas. A Well-bred Failure. The Roydon gelding Passenger, who won at Oamaru, is now seven years old and scored his second success with the win. He has been regarded as a well-bred failure, and probably some of those riding behind him thought he would stop, but he lasted long enough to win with the assistance of the break he got in the early part of the race. He is a half-brother to Academy, who showed promise as a youngster, but proved to be not worth owning at a gift. It is said that Passenger could at one time have been had as a gift.
Jockey Premiership. W. J. Broughton is giving H. N. Wiggins a great run for the pockey's premiership. Early in the season Wiggins went ahead, but during the holidays Broughton began to creep up and his four winners at Wairarapa the first day gave him a big lift. Broughton was only one behind Wiggins with one day to go at Ellerslie, but Wiggins drew three ahead with two winners, while Broughton was unsuccessful. Wiggins now has 34 winners and Broughton 31. Auckland’s Best Youngster. Though he may lack quality in appearance Lou Rousa is a particularly well-grown, hardy type of gelding possessing a good temperament, says an Auckland writer. He does not show any great brilliance in the early stages of his races, but is a very courageous finisher under pressure and is definitely not wanting in stamina. Lou Rosa has had four starts, his first appearance being in the Musket Stakes on the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, when he failed to show up. He was not produced again till the Waikato Racing Club's spring meeting, when he spreadeagled the field in the Tamahere stakes and recorded the fast time of 47 3-5 for half a mile, this form being fully borne out by his foTlowing two successes at Ellerslie. Lou Rosa was bred by his owner, Mr A. E. Lennard, and is by the Foxlaw horse Foxbridge, whose ■stock are racing very prominently. Rose, by Lucullus from Autumn Rose, by Soult. It is interesting to note that two Auckland Cup winners come from this family. Waimangu in 1910 and Santo Rosa in 1911. Their dam was Vieux Rose, who was bred by Mr W. Walters and was purchased by the late Mr John Lennard for the foundation of what has been a great winning family.
