New Lighthouse Site.
As the lighthouse at Cape Maria van Diemen is to be moved from the island on which it stands to the mainland, a road linking the present road at To Paki with the new site is to be constructed by the Public Works Department. The lighthouse is at present on a small rocky island separated from the mainland by a dangerous channel. The new road will be 10 miles in length and will be perhaps the most northerly in New Zealand. It is stated that to expedite construction the most modern machinery will be used by the department. Without Money. Two men who booked in at a leading Wellington hotel for Christmas weekend but had no money with which to pay their accounts were subsequently arrested and charged before Mr Stilwell. S.M.. in the Magistrates’ Court. Wellington, yesterday with being idle and disorderly in that they had insufficient lawful means of support. The accused, who pleaded guilty, were lan Simpson, clerk, aged 21. and Allan John Ross, alias William Raymond Fitzgerald, window-dresser, aged 28. They were each sentenced to one month's gaol with hard labour. De-tectivc-Sergeant W. McLennan prosecuted. It was stated in court that both accused had previous convictions. Australian Wheat Crop. The effect of the shortage of shipping caused by the war on Australian primary industries was referred to at Auckland yesterday by the Hon C. C. Latham, a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly and Leader of the Country Party, who is on a short holiday visit to New Zealand. Mr Latham said that a heavy catiyover of wheat, approximately half the Commonwealth crop, would be experienced this year through difficulties m marketing overseas. "In Australia generally, and I can speak authoritatively for Western Australia, there is a fairly big wheat crop this season, said Mr Latham. "It is probably more than we can ship during the yeai. The carry-over will range from 60,000.000 to 90,000.000 bushels, at least half the cron, all of which would go overseas if there were the ships to take it. One of the difficulties is that vessels can make several voyages to and from Canada and Argentina wjdi wheat while one voyage is being made to Australia. The cost is less, and the convoy work is not so great.”
