KING’S QUOTATION

TAKEN FROM BOOK WRITTEN BY MISS HASKINS. APTNESS IMPRESSES PEOPLE. The aptness of the quotation used by the King in his Christmas broadcast has greatly impressed the people of Great Britain. After the broadcast literary authorities endeavoured in vain to find the origin of the words used. It has now been disclosed that they were from a book written by Miss M. L. Haskins, "The Desert,'’ and were used as an introduction to some verses. Last Christmas these words were used by some women in Bristol for inclusion on Christmas cards, though they did not know their origin. This prompted a letter to be sent to “The Times,” pointing to their suitability as a Christmas message, and it is presumed that the King noticed them there. —By radio. (The quotation used by the King was: — I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied: "Go out, into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way").
