The Rev E. Chard. Perth. Australia, has been appointed assistant priest at St Peter’s Cathedral. Hamilton. The Hon C. G. Latham. Leader of the Country Party in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, recently arrived at Auckland.

Mr and Mrs A. McKay. Auckland. Mr and Mrs Miller. Mr and Mrs Dixon, Mr L. Shanahan. Wellington, are guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. Mr and Mrs L. Latham have returned to Wellington after spending Christmas with the latter’s mother, Mrs Brenkley of Renall Street, Masterton. The Rev E. J. Rich, of Masterton. has passed his final B.A. degree in connection with the Political Science examination recently conducted by the University of New Zealand. Driver Cyril Wilson, who is attached to the Lewis gun section in the first Echelon, has returned to Auckland after spending his final leave with his mother. Mrs W. Wilson. 18 Wrigley Street, Masterton. Two ex-Mastcrton students, who arc attending the School of Arts at Christchurch, were successful at the recent New Zealand University diploma in fine arts examination. They are Gillian Gooder, who passed in general history of art. and Nancy E. Adkin (anatomy). The Ladies' Social Guild of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church made a presentation recently to the Rev David McNeur, of a preacher’s gown, in appreciation of his services as minister. The gown was worn for the first time by Mr McNeur at the service on Sunday last, the recipient suitably thanking the ladies for their gift. Mr M. M. Cooper, B.Agr.Sc., B.Litt. (Oxon), Diploma of Rural Economy (Oxon.). and former Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Massey College, has been appointed lecturer in dairy husbandry at Massey College. He succeeds Dr C. P. McMeekan, who has been appointed to the chair of agriculture (animal husbandry) at Canterbury Agricultural College. The following pupils of the Wairarapa College have been awarded higher leaving certificates: —Patricia D. Baskiville, Patrick M. Cross, Glen E. Daysh, Allan M. M. Douglas, Gwendolyn M. Hancox, Elaine Hanley, Garry Hanley, Dora E. Hathaway, Brian C. Jones. Jean E. McLagan, Margaret G. C. McLaren, lan A. M. Prior, Angus A. Ross, Constance D. Shearer, Norma C. C. Shepherd, Gordon C. Slatter and James B. Steel.

The news of the death in France of Miss Ellen Frances Davidson has been received in Dunedin by cable from the Under-Secretary for War. Miss Davidson, who was the only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. E. Davidson, Dunedin, was a member of the Girl Guides and Tramping Club. In February last she left for a holiday in Canada and the United States, and shortly before war broke out she arrived in London. Practically on the same day as war was declared she joined up as nurse, for which profession she had been trained at Queen Alexandra s Hospital. She was speedily transferred to France. Her death occurred from influenzal pneumonia. The death has occurred in London of Mr Samuel George Raymond, K.C. Mr Raymond was born in Maryborough, Victoria, a son of Mr Francis B. Raymond, and was educated at Grenville College, Ballarat. He was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1883 and practiced in Timaru till 1910 and then in Christchurch. He became a King’s Counsel in 1913, and was Crown Prosecutor in Christchurch from 1914 till 1920, when he retired. Mr Raymond was chairman of the War Pensions Appeal Board in 1924 and 1925, and a member of the New Zealand delegation at the International Copyright Conference in Rome in 1928, and at the International Conference for the Revision of the Red Cross Convention in Geneva in 1929. He also represented New Zealand at a conference on the operation of Dominion legislation and merchant shipping legislation in '1929. He married in 1896 Miss Frances Barklie. daughter of Rev J. K. Barklie, and there was one daughter of the marriage.
