ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL

BUILDING FUND APPEAL. LARGE SUM REQUIRED. WELLINGTON, December 22. The Bishop of Wellington, in an interview. made it clear that though because of the war it was felt that the policy that had been followed could not now be pursued as vigorously to the full extent as before there was no question of abandoning the centenary appeal for the building of the Anglican cathedral in Wellington and for the establishment of a fighting fund. As a result of the war there was work for the church to do in the camps in meeting the spiritual and other needs of the troops and the assistance of the Church of England people was sought in this direction too; but at the same time he did not desire that the centenary appeal should be abandoned. He stated that the thanks-offering contributions of February 11 would be devoted to the cathedral project, and he hoped there would be a great response. The Bishop also said that the term of office of Canon Malcolm as organising secretary of the centennial appeal ended on March 31 and he would be returning to his parish at Hawera. This also involved Canon Malcolm’s resignation as secretary of the military affairs committee. During the past three months over £l3OO had been received for the centennial appeal and on December 14 new money in cash and promises totalled £72,091. of which £58,120 was earmarked for the cathedral. After payment for the site, £74,000, there would be a balance in the old cathedral fund of £21,687 and taking into account bequests and the value of the site occupied by St Paul’s Church and the rebuilding fund, approximately £106,000 was still required for the cathedral.
