- WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs Spicer (president) presiding over a fair attendance ol members.

It was decided to hold the annual picnic in January on Mr P. Macdonald’s property, Neronga. Miss Wolters, of Carterton, gave a very interesting demonstration on how to pack flowers and was followed with much interest. Miss Wolters also gave a talk on her visit to the Exhibition. Miss Wolters mentioned that one ol the most interesting exhibits in the Women’s Court was a basket made by a Native member of the local institute. The exhibit was much admired by all who had seen it. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her address. A competition for the best Christmas novelty was won by Mrs Spicer, with Miss Hanlon and Mrs Marshall second and third, respectively. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Smith. Marshall and Macdonald. Tennis. In a tennis tourney held at the local school prior to the holidays Bessie Carter won the girls’ championship and John Sutton the boys’. In the mixed doubles B. Carter and Couch defeated B. Swainson and Sutton. Much interest was centred in an exhibition match played during the week between two old time players—Messrs Carter and Sargent. After a great exhibition, which was followed with much interest the match ended in a narrow win for the latter player. The winner’s lightning services proved the match-winning factor.
