AN EKETAHUNA DANCE
(From our own Correspondent.) The dance given by Mr Tuck on Monday night was attended by about 40 couples, and passed off very pleasantly, all present seeming thoroughly to enjoy themselves. The picnic at Bacon’s Hill had (o be postponed from Monday until Tuesday on account of the bad weather, and as I passed the scene yesterday morning people seemed to be rolling up from all directions. There has been an almost entire absence of rowdyism these holidays, and there is no doubt that a strong influence in this direction was given by the wise action of the railway contractor in boldly ignoring the usual custom of paying the navvies before Christmas. Probably having to wait until Saturday, January 7, for their wages will cause many of them to grumble, but still it is really doing the men a good turn and a Christmas on strictly teetotal principles ought to be enjoyable if only for its novelty in some instances.
