LOWER VALLEY CLUB
The annual gathering of the Lower Valley Jockey Club was held on the Martinborough course on Boxing Day. The weather was fine but very windy, and the attendance about five hundred. The totalisator, under the management of Mr R. Macfarlane did a very good business, as did also Host Wilkinson, of the Tauherenikau Hotel, with the publican’s booth and Mr •W. Buckeridge with the refreshment stall. The games generally so noticeable at these gatherings were conspicuous by their absence. During the day the proceedings were enlivened with some very choice selections contributed by the Greytown Brass Band. The racing throughout was good, and with the exception of Buckeridge’s Scrubber coming down a cropper in the Hack Hurdle Race, there were fortunately no serious accidents to record. Five of the principal events were carried off by Mr McKenzie’s stable. The stewards, with their energetic secretary, Mr McLeod, are to be complimented for the satisfactory’ manner in which they carried out their arduous duties.
