CALVES AND LAMBS

CHILDREN’S CONTESTS WAIRARAPA DISTRICT GROUPS. JUDGING AT CARTERTON TODAY. (“Times-Age" Special.) The annual championship competitions in connection with the Wairarapa groups of the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs was held on the Carterton Showgrounds this morning. There was a large attendance of parents and the general public and keen interest was taken in the competitions. The judges of the lambs were Messrs G. Blatchford and M. McKay, both of Masterton. The pedigree calves were judged by Mr Howard Feast (Greytown) and the grade classes by Mr Alan Fisher (Carterton). The judges in each instance had some difficulty in making their awards. Mr Malone, of Greytown, had charge of arrangements and everything worked smoothly under his guidance. He was ably assisted by a capable committee. The awards were as follow: — Lambs. Shortwool. —Patty Rendle (South Featherston) 1. Rex Leighton (South Featherston) 2, Delma Jensen (Waihakeke) 3. Longwool. — Annette Fairbrother (Dalefield) 1, Rex Blake (West Taratahi) 2, Gordon Edwards (West Taratahi) 3. Calves. Purebred calves (eight entries): Beryl James (Waihakeke) 1; Betty Parker (Dalefield) 2; Irene Thomas (Dalefield) 3. Care and handling, pedigree class.—lrene Thomas (Dalefield.) 1, Betty Parker (Dalefield) 2, Beryl James (Waihakeke) 3. Grade class type (26 entries).—Trevor Snell ' (Kahutara) 1, Bernard Patrick (Te Whiti) 2, June Williams (Carterion) 3. Grade class, rearing and handling.— P.ae Humphries (Greytown) 1. June Williams (Carterton) 2, Noel Hutchings (Greytown) 3. Shorthorn Association’s Cup.—lrene Thomas (Dalefield) 1, Trevor Snell (Kahutara.) 2, Brenda Morgan (Parkvale) 3. The calf championship was won by Bernard Patrick (Te Whiti), with an Ayrshire. Mr L. A. Keats complimented the exhibitors on the condition of their calves and lambs which were a credit to them. Mr G. H. Perry presented the cups to the winners as follow: —Pedigree calf (type), Beryl James (Waihakeke). Rearing and handling: R. E. Thomas (Dalefield). Grade (type): Trevor Snell. Rearing and handling: Rae Humphries (Greytown). Shorthorns: R. E. Thomas. Longwood lamb: Annette Fairbrother. Short wool lamb: Patricia Renall. Best type of shortwool lamb: Rex Leighton (special prize).
