The Governor-General and Lady Galway arrived at Invercargill from Te Anau yesterday morning. His Excellency addressed a meeting of the Provincial Patriotic Council and then, with Lady Galway, attended the Royal Show, which he officially opened. Later in the afternoon the GovernorGeneral opened the new headquarters for the Sea Scouts and her Excellency was entertained at the Women’s Club. The Hon F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, returned to Wellington from the north yesterday. The Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, returned to Wellington yesterday from Ohakune. The Hon W. E. Parry. Minister of Internal Affairs, left Wellington by the Main Trunk express yesterday afternoon for Auckland. M. Pilet-Golaz, a Swiss lawyer and politician, has been elected President of the Swiss Confederation, a Berne cablegram reports. He will be installed in 1940.

Mr J. D. O’Connor, who took his seat for the first time at the December meeting of the Wellington Education Board as the representative of Masterton, was welcomed to the board table yesterday by the chairman. Mr W. V. Dyer. Mr H. Wyatt Chadwick, of Colombo Road, Masterton, and formerly of the staff of Messrs H. J. Jones and Co.. Masterton. has left to take up a position in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and will be stationed at Wigram Aerodrome. Christchurch. The reappointment of Professor James Shelley as Director of Broadcasting was announced by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, after a meeting of Cabinet yesterday. The term of his original three-year appointment expired at the end of last month.

Mr T. H. Daniell, son of Mr and Mrs F. C. Daniell, of Masterton, who is attending the Auckland University, passed in the following subjects at the examination held in November: Theory of Architectural Design. Structural Mechanics. Architectural (Construction and Descriptive Geometry and Sciagraphy. Mr A. Donald, representative of the Wellington Education Board on the Wairarapa College Board of Governors. tendered his resignation from the college board al yesterday-’s meeting of the education board. Mr Donald’s resignation was received with regret and he was thanked for his services. Mr J. D. O'Connor was appointed to take his place on the college board of governors.
