LIQUOR AT DANCES
CHARGES UNDER NEW LEGISLATION. SEVERAL OFFENDERS FINED. The first cases in the Wairarapa laid under the legislation recently passed and bearing on the control of liquor at or near dances were heard in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Five defendants were fined £1 each, and a request by counsel for the suppression of the name of one the defendants could not be entertained, as there was no provision in the Act for that course to be taken. Terence Brady, Francis James Knowles and Herbert Keith Minton were each charged than on November 25, 1939, at Masterton, while a dance was being held in the Masterton Municipal Hall, they did have liquor in their possession in the vicinity of such hall.
Each defendant, was fined £1 and costs, 10s in respect to Brady and Knowles, 12s in respect to Minton. The Magistrate pointed out that offenders were liable to a fine of £lO. Laurie Compton was charged that on November 25, at Masterton, while a dance was being held in the Masterton Municipal Hall he did have liquor in his control in the vicinity of the said hall. A similar charge was also preferred against Derek Egerton Tatton. for whom Mr J. K. Logan appeared. Each defendant was fined £1 and costs 10s.
In reply to a request by Mr Logan, the Magistrate said there was no provision for the suppression of the names of defendants in cases of this kind.
