Large bunches of dates on the palms in Memorial Square, Napier, are in the ripening process, and a few days ago it was noticed that the bunches include several dates which were brown and ripe. Although these dates are not of the variety which are ' purchased in the grocer’s shop, they have a distinctive date flavour and are quite palatable. Last year these palms bore large quantities of dates, but this year, probably due to the favourable conditions, the palms have excelled themselves, and the branches are weighed down by the crop of fruit. It is only in the case of the older palms where the fruit has matured, although the younger plants have borne fruit of a smaller size.
