DECORATIONS AWARDED
During 1 his surprise visit to the Royal Air Force base his Majesty .awarded the first decorations in the field —the Military Division of the O.B.E.’The recipients were Flying Officer R.' C. Gravely,- who rescued his observer from their burning plane; and Sergeant F. T. -Gardiner, who navigated a damaged bomber to the base and extinguished the wireless operator’s burning clothes regardless of the fact that his own were aflame.' His Majesty invested General Gamelin with the G.C.B. and General Georges, the French Commander-in-Chief in the Field, with G.B.E. He also awarded the D.S.O. to a French Cavalry officer and the D.S.M. to a French fighter pilot who assisted a British fighter to bring down a Dornier. Pilot Sergeant Phillips, who was decorated by General Gamelin. was badly wounded but remained in his machine until the last moment to avoid crashing in a French village. after which he parachuted. His Majesty travelled in France in a special train and he was accompanied throughout the tour of the front lines by the British Commander-in-Chief, Lord Gori, and the Duke of Gloucester.
