IN A MAGINOT FORT
The King lunched in a Maginot fort hundreds oi' feet underground. Inside the fort, in the presence of a guard of honour of two French companies and c.ne British, the King witnessed tli? ccnferring of a decoration by General Gamelin on Pilot Sergeant Phillips, who received the Croix de Guerre. The King later inspected a battery Oi heavy French artillery and saw a parade of famous French units, including an Algerian regiment of Spahis. His Majesty took up his quarters in a special locality often used by General Gamelin. Earlier the King saw at the Royal, Air Force French headquarters a wonderful series of photographs of the Western Front and the Siegfried Linetaken by British and French airmen. His Majesty wore the blue uniform of a Marshal of the R.A.F. during a four-hour inspection of bomber squadrons. It was bitterly cold, with occasional sleet. Fighters and bombers circled overhead ceaselessly. The French gathered in hundreds to cheer the King as he arrived at the unnamed village where the squadrons are billeted. The King donned gumboots and inspected the aerodromes.
