THE RAILWAY HANDICAP.
CHANCES OF CONTESTANTS. Of those entered for the Railway Handicap, the second leg of the. Ellerslie double on Boxing Day. Llangollen. Paper Slipper. Disdain and Whirling are the only horses who figured in the race last year. Suleiman, who heads the list witli 9.6, has only started twice this season. He was unplaced at Te Rapa with 9.9, in the Cambridge Handicap though he made a bold showing for the greater part of the journey, while last Saturday < nt Ellerslie he carried 9.10 into second place behind Arvakur in the Cheltenham Handicap when conceding that horse 381bs. In the Railway Handicap at Auckland he will be meeting Arvakur on 71bs better terms, which, with the improvement he is likely to make in the meantime, should be sufficient to enable him to turn the table on Arvakur there. Llangollen. 9.5. was unplaced last year with 8.10. but claims an engagement also in the Auckland Cup. She has proved herself an excellent sprinter and should she be reserved for this race will be heavily backed. Paper Slipper has 9.2, one pound less than last year and three pounds less than the 9.5 he carried into fourth position in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riecarton last month. When in form he is a hard horse to beat.
Nightcalm. 8.6. has shown form in the South Island and will bo well supported. Amigo. 8.13. at Feilding ran sufficiently well to suggest that by the time the Railway comes up for decision he will be at his best again. Orate in several races lately has misbehaved at the barrier but should ho get away from the barrier smartly will keep the rest of the field busy.
3 Our Jean, who won at Te Rapa, will , find the opposition harder at Auck- ’ land, but nevertheless must be given <. | a chance if she starts. | Olympus is showing improved form and may make things interesting at the business end of the race. At Te Rapa she failed to get closer than third to . Our Jean and Llangollen. • Riders for Woodville. > Additional riding engagements for I Woodville include: W. J. Broughton. ' Oragon. Beaupartir (second day), Indian Sun, Little Dorrit. Millament. Flammarion, Colonel Bogey; B. H. ' Morris. Friesland, The Ring. Kotua: P. Jan r s. High Peer: J. Chaplin. Daregain. Horses for Dunedin. Wardress, who has had an easy time since the New Zealand Cup meeting, will probably be taken to the Dunedin meeting by J. Tomkinson, who will also nominate Lockit. Turncoat and the two-year-old Atreus. Turncoat's trip will depend on how he shapes at Hororata on Saturday, and Atreus will be taken, south more with the idea of gaining experience than of racing him to any extent, if at all. Aggravate, from the same stable, will race on the West Coast circuit, where he had a most successful innings last year. > Thermidor Not Rehandicapped. As a result of her victory in the Kurow Cup on Saturday Thermidor became liable for a i-ehandicap for the Auckland Cup. However, the handicapper. Mr F. J. McMenamin. has decided not to alter her weight, and she remains at her original impost. 7.8. Yours Truly in Sydney. A Press Association cable from Sydney yesterday announced that Yours Truly, who has been purchased by Mr W. A. Ffeeman, will not run in the Summer Cup at Randwick. Yours Truly, who arrived after a rough trip, will be given ample opportunity of settling down before racing. Change of Stables. Hunting Bee, who has been a member of A. Tinker’s stable at Ellerslie for the past six months, has had a change of quarters and is now under the care of H. Gray, who has built up a fair-sized team since transferring back to the north. Hunting Bee was a winner as a two-year-old last season, and she is one of the four progeny of Safari who havp yet raced, two of the others being Globe Trotter and Enrich.
