WINNING JOCKEYS
WIGGINS RETAINS LEAD. Maintaining his consistent form by I riding two winners at the Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting. 11. N. Wiggins is still well ahead on the list of winning horsemen for the season with 26 successful mounts. P. Atkins is next with 20. but last year's premier jockey, W. J. Broughton, who rode five winners at Feilding. and brought, his total to 19. is vapidly closing up. The following is the list of the most successful jockeys at this stage: — H. N. Wiggins 26 P. Racing in France received a knockout blow when war was declared and all meetings were abandoned for the flat racing Horses, many of them valuable for breeding purposes, were requisitioned by the army authorities, and many racing men were called to the colours. Trotters Sold. Grand Mogul and Bittersweet, who have carried the colours of the Dunedin sportsman Mr G. J. Barton with a fair measure of success during the past few seasons, have been purchased by a Perth owner, and they are to leave for Australia in the near future. After showing exceptional promise in his early racing. Grand Mogul was purchased from Mr A. McLeod by Mr Barton. and in his ownership won £3943. Among Grand Mogul’s principal victories were the King Edward Handicap (£700). Louisson Handicap (£1000), Easter Handicap (£750). President’s Handicap (£750). Flying Handicap (£300). and the Recovery Handicap (£300). Practically all of these events were decided at Addington.
Grand Mogul was bred in Southland and is a chestnut gelding by Adioo Guy from Logan’s Mission, dam of Smile Again and Aspir'ant. The line goes back to Regina Belle, who produced Logan Chief (2.7.?) and founded a line from which came Native Chief, Southern Chief and a host of other winners.
Bittersweet is a handsome mare and is bred on fashionable lines. She is by Wrack from Nantwich, who . won among other events the Sapling Stakes and Great Northern Derby. Nantwich, a daughter of Nelson Bingen and Pearlchild, has been a stud success, and included in her progeny are Ciro, Sea Pearl, First Wrack, Vanity Fair, Flying Cloud and Verey Lights. FIXTURES.
